I popped in to see the gynaecologist the other day for a quick chat about my lady parts, and as I sat in the waiting room with my teeth grasping my lower lip as if it were their latest kill, I felt my heart pound like a drum against my ribcage. Not because it might hurt. Not because it might not go to plan. But because I was worried my vagina looked ugly.
I mean, how ridiculous is that?
But recent studies found that 75% of women are worried that their bits don’t have the sex appeal that they’d like them to. Are you part of that percentage? If so, read on.
Vaginas are magical things with the ability to give life, (although not via CPR. I wouldn’t recommend that one!) and have the toe-curling power to make you feel euphoric. So why does it matter what they look like? Well, you could say the same thing about your physical appearance. You could be the most wonderful human being in the world, and some of your attention, (although it varies from person to person), will centre around your appearance. Part of that appearance lays within your knickers, being it’s amazing self and making you happy on a (hopefully) daily basis.
So let’s talk vaginas.
The first and most important thing I’m going to tell you is that you should not compare your flower to anyone else’s. Sounds generic, right? But the truth is that just like a fingerprint, everyone’s downstairs region is different. Think of it like a pizza. While a pizza all consists of dough and a crust (stuffed if that’s what you fancy, wink wink!), they also have a massive range of toppings. Vaginas all consist of the same biological parts (labia, clitoris, vaginal opening etc), but they have a massive range of appearances. Some are bumpy, some are smooth, some are flappy and some are tiny. But let me assure you, whatever category your vag falls under, it is completely and utterly normal.
So why do we care so much?
The answer lies within the media – porn, more specifically. We, as human beings, compare our bodies to those we are in awe of. Porn is the most direct signpost to what people find attractive because it’s literally there for that reason. So when we watch porn, we automatically and subconsciously compare our bits to theirs. It’s almost like they are telling us ‘this is what your vagina should look like. If it doesn’t, your guy will never get a hard-on, you’ll never have sex and you’ll die alone, probably devoured by your millions of cats and then you’ll be on the news as that woman who died because her cats ate her.’ (Perhaps that was a slight exaggeration, but you get where I’m coming from).
We, as women, need to fight this prejudice by embracing our vagina (both emotionally and physically!) and by understanding that each and every one of them is completely and utterly magical. With 8000 nerve endings in the clitoris alone, our orgasms trump men’s hands down. It adjusts its size when it needs to and works bloody (sorry) hard to keep us fertile and regulate our hormones. The least we can do is appreciate its beauty, regardless of shape and size.
Rest assured that your lady bits are perfectly attractive, and show it some love from time to time. Your vagina rocks!
